Most have heard of "taking the High Road." We all use a decision making process which shows the stuff we're made of.  Human's are the ONLY species whom demonstrate advanced moral development.  "Why we do what we do" is described by psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg as six advancing stages.  In any given situation we generally act or react in the following ways:

The higher stages we work toward: the greater we maximize our potential. Even in a moral dilemma, a peace that passes understanding often flows from post-conventional / principled level seekers.  Their influence may be understated, yet ultimately far-reaching.
